"PageRank, the algorithm developed at Google for determining the importance of a web page relative to other URLs, was a breakthrough in returning relevant content. The teams in the currently underway NCAA tournament comprise a network of entities who send signals (i.e. wins and losses this season) to each other not unlike the links among web content.

During the discussion, Joe Blue will walk you through the algorithm using this year’s results and with just 30 lines of code, produce the page ranks of NCAA teams. A quick sanity check with the “official" rankings will confirm they seem believable; then we will examine how the bracket looks after the first round to see if any predictions for the final four are forthcoming."
