How to access a table created and populated by Java API in the HBase shell

I have created a table using the Java API (HBaseAdmin.createTable(HTableDescriptor).
Now when I list the tables with "list_namespace_tables 'default' in HBase shell,
I get:

hbase(main):045:0> list_namespace_tables 'default'
TABLE
MY_DATA
1 row(s) in 0.0190 seconds

But when I try to describe the table:
hbase(main):079:0> desc 'default:MY_DATA'
ERROR: Unknown table Table '/tables/MY_DATA' does not exist.!

The effect is the same if I omit the tablespace name in the "desc" command and just use the table name.

How to reference this table to check the structure and content with list and get commands in the HBase shell?
