MapR 5.0 Starting Warden on New Node gets apport error

This is similar to http://answers.mapr.com/questions/164003/we-are-unable-to-start-mapr-community-edition-cont.html

However, I am on a trial M7, this is not a VM, and rebooting didn't help.  I am getting the same warden errorrs (posted below) also, a weird directory called | (pipe) is being created in my home directory owned by root when I try to start to the warden with /etc/init.d/mapr-warden start.   If I cd to the pipe (|) directory, there is /usr/share/apport in there... it's like the shell script involved isn't doing something correctly.

no jobtracker to stop
sh: 1: /usr/share/apport: Permission denied
