Remarkable timing. The 5.0 version was just released recently and the 5.0 sandbox should be out very shortly.
Starting with version 4.1 should be fine. There are some new features in 5.0 that you may want to play with, but all existing features should roll forward from 5.0 pretty easily.
The big features include:
1) full audit logging in a format that can be queried using Apache Drill
2) Hadoop upgraded to 2.7 with patches back-ported from 2.7.1
3) very interesting security capabilities, including field level security even in flat files via Drill views.
