Do you need to purchase license upgrades when you migrate an m5 cluster from v3 to v4? How about a really old cluster running v1.2 --> v4?

As long as you have a support contract in force you can upgrade to any version you like.
For instance, if you have an old version of m5, you can upgrade to the last 4.x version. This is very nice because this gives you the ability to promote a mirror to active status. That makes disaster recovery substantially easier. It can also be used in development, since you can have a mirror of production that you can repeatedly reset back to a known state.
The only gotcha is that you may need to ask for a new license to enable features in the new version of MapR. The old license will work, of course, but the new features won't. The new license can be obtained without any additional charge from support.
