How do I scan a M7 table as oridnary unix user from hbase shell ( and not as root)

MapRBuildVersion: 3.1.1.26113.GA

As 'root' ( all data loaded as linux user root)
both these hbase shell commands work
1)  hbase(main):003:0> list '/hbase/ejabberd_chatdb/'
2)  hbase(main):005:0> scan '/hbase/ejabberd_chatdb/logdb_users_ody_mobboss_online_com', {'LIMIT' => 1}

as user 'john'
1) 'list' works
2)  'scan' returns no data

I tried setting permissions via this cmd, but to no avail
maprcli table  edit -path  '/hbase/ejabberd_chatdb/logdb_users_ody_mobboss_online_com' -defaultreadperm u:john

$ hadoop fs -ls '/hbase/ejabberd_chatdb/logdb_users_ody_mobboss_online_com'
Found 1 items
trwxr-xr-x   3 root root          2 2015-03-20 20:57 /hbase/ejabberd_chatdb/logdb_users_ody_mobboss_online_com
