Running as root

I've been trying to use the quick installer on a group of VMs at my company.  I've run into the following error (running in debug mode):

> TASK: [yum pkg="/tmp/epel-release.rpm"
> state=installed]
> *********************** failed: [hostname] =>
> {"changed": true, "rc": 1, "results":
> ["Loaded plugins: fastestmirror\n"]}

This appears to be a permissions issue.  I'm running the installer in a root shell using the following command:
>/opt/mapr-installer/bin/install --debug -u <username> -s -U <username> -K new

I give the installer a working sudo password in order to run commands.  I'm not sure why I'm running into an error regarding permissions.  Can somebody shed some light onto this problem?
