Are all files metadata stored in memory all the time?

MapR's main USP is the distributed namenode architecture but I was wondering whether all the files' metadata is still stored in memory?
Or is it that when a file is less frequently used its metadata is removed from primary memory (say after a timeout) and kept in disk to be loaded when when it is accessed again?
