FileSystem.mkdirs(Path) returns true when Path is a file in maprfs

If I have a file in maprfs, and I execute the following code

   FileSystem fileSystem = FileSystem.get(new URI("maprfs:///"), new JobConf());
   boolean success = fileSystem.mkdirs(new Path("/foo/bar.txt"));
where, as preconditions, /foo/bar.txt exists in maprfs as a regular (non-directory) file, I see that success is set to true.

This is not the case with plain vanilla Hadoop. I'm wondering if this is a maprfs defect.
