How does the HBase Client behave when intermittent network issues arise? Can you please point to the relevant docs? How do we know if the Client has recovered?

HBase client operations are, by default, invoked with auto retries in case of failures where it makes sense to retry. This includes intermittent network loss, service outage etc.
The application would be notified (through appropriate exceptions) only if the retries have been exhausted (or an unrecoverable exception happens, for example, attempting to read from a table which no longer exists).
This is configurable and the behavior has been evolving. More can be found at [HBASE-5682], [HBASE-6326].
