Tutorial / demo vm skew

This question is partly answered in other threads specifically about volume management.
I am using the V3 demo mapr vm.  The tutorial steps for volume creation say that one should
fill in the topology field.   However it is never rendered on the volume creation details page.

Instead the new MyVolume mounted on /myvolume is automatically assigned to the top
topology identifier '/'.

Is this correct default behavior of the GUI???

Is there a tutorial path which does all the management via the command line or by the REST API with
curl?

If you multiply the complexity of this GUI by a non trivial node count, it seems that
using the GUI to manage the cluster may be less efficient than using
command line and scripts ???
