Mapr accessing raw drives vs. paritions

We know mapr can access drives directly (/dev/sdc for example)  and partitions (/dev/sdc1) I am guessing the physical drive access is better, but can anyone speak to the actual differences?  What if I have 11 drives with physical access and one drive with a partition access on a box with 12 physical cores. Is that one "spindle" that is a partition rather than a drive going to pose a problem?
