disk setup - partitions on the same device?

Hi,

According to http://www.mapr.com/doc/display/MapR/Quick+Start+-+Install+on+a+Small+Cluster, it states as part of the requirements:

"Storage — At least three unmounted physical drives or partitions per node for use by MapR storage. In a production environment, each node is likely to have at least 12 physical disks."

When setting up a cluster where one server has one physical disk, is there any benefit from using this configuration:

/dev/sdc
(raw device)

versus

/dev/sdc1
/dev/sdc2
/dev/sdc3
(partitioned)

Will MapR duplicate blocks across different partitions but the same device, or is it smart enough to  reliably distribute the data across to other servers?

Thanks,
Josh
