losing data and recovery

For testing purposes I had a volume with single copy replication. The data was spread out across 10 nodes. when I failed drives on one node, I was not able to access the contents of the entire volume. I was able to access files from other volumes in that cluster.

Is this really the case? Shouldn't I be losing only files associated with the blocks on the last node ?  Is there a way to recover from this, delete the files which were lost and restore only those files from backup?
