I setup Hadoop-1.0.3 in pseudodistributed mode.. After running

    bin/hadoop namenode -format
    bin/start-all.sh
    bin/hadoop fs -put conf input     (ref:http://hadoop.apache.org/common/docs/r1.0.3/single_node_setup.html)

I tried:

    $ bin/hadoop jar hadoop-examples-*.jar grep input output 'dfs[a-z.]+'
but getting an error:

    nikhil@Krishna:/usr/package/hadoop-1.0.3$ bin/hadoop jar hadoop-examples-*.jar grep input output 'dfs[a-z.]+'
