Setting up MapR disk(s) / partition(s) for single node cluster on a laptop

I read: http://www.mapr.com/doc/display/MapR/Setting+Up+Disks+for+MapR

for executing: http://www.mapr.com/doc/display/MapR/Single+Node+-+Ubuntu

However it's not immediately clear how that applies to a laptop (that has only one disk).  Is it possible to point MapR at a regular directory just to test MapR out?
