performance of volume removal

I've noticed that when I remove a volume (maprcli volume remove -name s1) the cli call returns quickly yet the cluster is running full tilt for, what seems like, a long time (over an hour for a volume with millions of 100K or so files).

Is volume removal a constant time operation or is it somehow dependent on the volume's content?  It almost feels like the files are being deleted one by one given the amount of time it takes for the cluster to go idle after the volume remove request.
