Can M3 run on two nodes only?

The documentation specifies that the node size is from 3 up. I only have two machines. Is is possible to still setup a functioning cluster with guaranteed no data loss? What is the reason that three is the minimum cluster size? It seems that one active node and a standby node should be enough to ensure everything is backed up. I seem to remember not too long ago, redundancy means two for everything.

I can possibly live with the fact that the failover is not automatic and have to manually restart the crashed server. I understand that zookeeper requires three nodes to allow one node to fail. If automatic failover is not required, is it possible to configure a two nodes cluster.
