How to use the HBaseThriftServer (python to hbase put)?

Trying to write sets of 'records' to hbase on mapr 6.0 for storage with the HBase thrift server from a python script, but don't understand how to interface with it. I see that the server appears to be running from the MCS, but have never used thrift before and don't know how to proceed from there. SSHing to the node that claims to be running the server and trying to run the thrift command (as hinted at in the docs, Hbase/ThriftApi - Hadoop Wiki) shows no command recognized. Looking at this MapR article (Support Portal), I was not able to figure out how to do a simple record put as I am trying to do, since was unable to find the API docs for the hbase libraries that the example coded was importing.

Would appreciate if anyone with basic experience using thrift could show an example of connecting python code to a thrift server and putting a record in a table (as well as any official docs links). Thanks.
