6.0 HiveServer2 User Authentication Issue

Did an almost clean install of MapR 6.0 (I believe the mySQL database already existed.)

I have two issues....

1) The Hive metastore tables that control roles/permissions/etc ... are empty. Need to find either SQL scripts to create admin permissions for users or output of table dumps so I can piece together the relationships.

2) I can connect to Hive via the hive shell if I am user mapr or root.  But as myself, I end up getting hit with the following error:

2018-01-01T11:49:46,444  INFO [main] thrift.HadoopThriftAuthBridge25Sasl: Hive is configured for user authentication:
2018-01-01T11:49:46,446 ERROR [main] hive.metastore: Couldn't create client transport
java.io.IOException: Unsupported authentication method: CUSTOM

Now... the Mapr docs say that the user authentication already supports SASL and CUSTOM.

I didn't set up the hive-site.xml and its missing anything surrounding  authentication.

So my questions are:

1) What is causing hive to look for a CUSTOM authentication method.

2) What's the best way to fix this?

I'm running community edition on a single node cluster.  No idea why this happened.

Thoughts?
