Does snapshots in volume uses quota space? Please clarify
They do not - the only thing that counts toward a quota is the actual storage space taken up by the original copy of the data. Example: you store 10 GB that compresses to 8 GB. That's replicated 3 times (total 24 GB), and you take a few snapshots. The only thing that counts against the volume quota is the 8 GB it took to store the first copy.
Follow-up question I had from reading your answer . If the snapshots pace doesn't affect the quota, where is the snapshot space accounted for?
The snapshot is part of the volume. So when you use the GUI or command line to query the actual space occupied by a volume, it will include snapshots.
Keep in mind that snapshots only start taking up space when the files included in the snapshot are modified. If you're taking a snapshot as a backup of sorts, and those files don't change - the snapshot doesn't consume any space.
One more doubt, let say I have quota set for 100gb and advisory quota of 90gb, in which case we will be getting alert.
When the overall space that includes both snapshot and actual data space reaching 90gb.
Or only when the user data reached 90gb.
Hi sumathi saravanan
If you have data that has a logical size of : 50GB (non compressed, non replicated, non snapshot-ed)
And that after compression it takes : 40GB
And after replication (factor = 3) it takes : 120GB
And that you created a set of snapshots that took with time : 10GB
In total your data takes 130GB ( 3x40 + 10 ) of cluster disque space.
But, the data size that will account into your quota is only 40GB (the compressed, non-replicated, non-snapshot data size),
You will get an alert when your (compressed, non-replicated, non-snapshot) data reaches 90GB... when this happens, the physical disque space your data takes is more than 270GB.
As explained in this documentation : https://maprdocs.mapr.com/52/AdministratorGuide/c_setting_quotas_for_users_groups.html

These concepts are covered if you take Cluster Admin certification.
