Spark saveAsHadoopDataSet for Binary Tables?

I've been testing the various ways of loading data into MapR-DB and have gotten pretty solid performance from saveAsHadoopDataSet() in spark.

Is there a way to leverage that to store data to JSON tables rather than binary tables?

Note that the Spark OJAI connector requires  MapR 5.2.1 and I can't get off of 5.2.0 anytime soon.  So, I can't leverage that particular option unfortunately.
