Error while processing statement: FAILED: Execution Error, return code 1 from org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.exec.mr.MapRedTask

Question asked by ihijazi on Aug 2, 2016

at org.apache.hive.jdbc.HiveStatement.execute(HiveStatement.java:296)

You can run it from CLI with no issues, but va JDBC (remotely) or Beeline, you get the above when you try to execute MapReduce related task such as count(1).

If it happens to you, and it drives you crazy, then you simply need to:

1. Double check the hive path has the proper ownership/permissions (don't mess with them if you don't what you're doing)

2. The core-site.xml doesn't contain any WRONG security related setting/s, such as:

"hadoop.security.group.mapping" set to something like "org.apache.hadoop.security.JniBasedUnixGroupsMappingWithFallback" (f not needed, it's bey default anyway)

Hope it saves you some time.

Cheers
